When Tortilla Familia decided to swap their plastic tortilla bags for a more eco-friendly paper alternative, we had to balance the need to keep their aesthetic consistent while still delivering a considerable refresh of the packaging.
The bold orange brand color that was easy to work with on the plastic incarnation of their packaging didn’t immediately translate to the brown paper of the new bags. We played around until we came up with the concept of physically stamping the design onto the paper in black and then coloring little bits of the illustration in. This concept allowed us to be playful and differentiate the bags from similar brands in the space.
Straight from Mexico to your door: using illustrations to tell a brand story
The tortillas main selling point is that they are homemade, authentic, and actually come from Mexico. We wanted to get that homemade feeling into the bags, without sacrificing a clean and minimal look that consumers could trust. We used handwritten fonts and line illustrations to mimic a handmade bag to go with the hand crafted tortillas.
We were thrilled to design the honey jar for Tortilla Familia's Sonoran honey. Classic bright yellow and black bee stripes served as a backdrop, little line illustrations of bees buzzed joyfully around the logo, and the word 'honey' melted deliciously all over the front. It's the kind of packaging that has you licking your lips and wanting to unscrew the top as quickly as possible! We also made sure to let shoppers know at a glance that this honey was raw, unfiltered and authentically Mexican (like the rest of Tortilla Familia's tasty imports.)
